Q ‘What exercise is best for me to lose weight? I don't want to get muscly, just tone up.’

A

This is the most common question that I’m asked by women. To address the first part of the question, any exercise is a great addition to your lifestyle to help you lose weight. If you don’t know what to do, start with something you like, i.e. swimming, walking, tennis and progress from there.

Exercising with weights does not automatically lead to gained muscle mass; it comes from specific weight training programmes. For women it is especially difficult to gain muscle due to naturally lower testosterone levels.

The benefits of weights being incorporated into your exercise programme are significant, especially for women. It can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis through increased bone density, burn calories, improve balance and help you get stronger.

My name is Sean McFall and I have lost 100 pounds with Weight Watchers.

Throughout my weight loss journey I found exercise to be a great help with my fitness goals, motivation, weight loss itself and overall stress reliever. Before I started Weight Watchers I was never a fan of going to the gym, in fact before starting I was a member in my local gym for over a year and I can count the number of times I went on one hand.

After I got over the mental block I had against exercise I started to enjoy it and even better I started to love it. There are so many health benefits to exercise, the most important one for me was it helped me focus on what I wanted which was my weight loss.

I’ve now qualified as a personal trainer and fitness instructor and I want to help others who have been in the same situation as me, people who don’t go to the gym, or are embarrassed about exercising, people who lack confidence or people who just don’t know where to start.
